Week 2 Discussion Introduction

The purpose of this discussion is to understand the importance of referring to the ICD-10-CM Official Coding Guidelines for instruction on how to best assign codes. Follow the three-step plan Complete your Initial Post by Wednesday at 11:59pm EST. 1. Read: Discussion Background ICD-10-CM Guideline I.B.5 states that symptoms integral to a disease process should not be coded separately. This guideline is crucial in preventing overcoding and ensuring accurate representation of the primary condition. For example, in a scenario where a patient presents with nausea and vomiting due to gastroenteritis, these symptoms should not be coded separately as they are integral to the gastroenteritis diagnosis. Read the full articles listed below: ICD-10-CM Coding Tips: Signs and Symptoms-AAPC Knowledge Center Don't Separately Report Symptoms Included in a Definitive Diagnosis - AAPC Knowledge Center 2. Initial Post: Create a new thread and answer all three parts of the initial prompt below
  • Discuss the importance of Guideline I.B.5 in preventing redundant coding.
  • Based on the scenario provided, explain how the guideline should be applied to the coding of nausea and vomiting in a case of gastroenteritis.
  • Share strategies to help coders consistently apply this guideline in practice.
  • Complete your Reply Posts by Sunday at 11:59pm EST.
3. Reply Posts: Reply to two people on different days To add to the academic conversation, reply to your classmates/instructor by introducing a new idea that applies personal experience(s) and/or new knowledge gained from either courseroom material(s) or research (UMA Library). Make sure your reply is substantive. For example, How were your thoughts and ideas similar or different? Do you agree or disagree with their point of view, and why or why not? Remember to build on your classmates’ posts and expand the conversation as if you were all sitting in the same room having a face-to-face discussion. Need help creating replies?
  • Discuss with a classmate one (1) potential negative impact of not using the guidelines to select a code.
  • Reply to a classmate and discuss one (1) additional method you will use to build good coding habits.
