Application
An application (also called an app) in CommCare is the digital tool you build for your program. It’s what frontline workers use on their mobile devices to register cases, fill out forms, and track visits. It helps frontline workers collect data, do visits with cases, and record information, all from one place, which is the app.

Once Amina's case has been created, during a future visit, if you record Amina’s new age or health status, the case gets updated with that new information. These updates are saved as case properties (like "age" or "last visit date"), which means the app remembers them and can show them again the next time you open a form for Amina. This keeps the current data of the case and helps you track real progress over time, instead of collecting one-time data that quickly becomes outdated.
When you no longer need to track a case like Amina's, maybe because she has completed the program, moved away, or is no longer eligible, you can close her case in the app. Closing a case means Amina’s record is no longer active. It won’t show up in future follow-up forms, and users won’t be able to update it anymore. Closing a case hides it from the app but keeps the data for reporting - all the information collected about Amina is still saved and can be used for reports. This helps keep the app clean and focused, so you're only seeing cases that still need follow-up.
If you register a new child named Amina using the app, a case is created for her. That case will stay in the app and can be updated with new information during future visits. Any data you collect (like Amina’s age, health status, or last visit) is saved as case properties. These can be reused in other forms or seen later during follow-up visits.
