PROJECT:
2-POINT PERSPECTIVE SHAPE COMPOSITION
You will create a dynamic composition using 2-point perspective to draw a series of geometric forms that appear three-dimensional in space. Through careful construction, overlapping, and shading, you will explore how artists use space, light, and value to transform flat shapes into convincing 3D forms.
BY THE END OF THIS PROJECT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
- Construct accurate 2-point perspective drawings using a horizon line and two vanishing points.
- Demonstrate an understanding of spatial relationships through overlapping, scale, and placement.
- Apply techniques for modifying forms — such as slicing, merging, and cutting holes — to create complex shapes.
- Use value (light to dark) with black and white colored pencils to show light source, volume, and contrast.
- Create a balanced and visually interesting composition that uses space effectively.
INSTRUCTIONS
TIPS
SETUP
Lightly sketch with pencil before committing with colored pencils. Use a ruler for precision — perspective requires clean, straight edges. Think about foreground, middle ground, and background placement. Consider the interaction of forms — how they fit together, overlap, or cut through one another.

CRAFTSMANSHIP and COMPOSITION
- Keep perspective lines clean and light.
- Darken only the final, visible edges.
- Arrange shapes in a balanced, interesting layout that leads the viewer’s eye through space.
SETUP
- Begin with a horizon line and two vanishing points on your paper.
- Lightly sketch several rectangular or cube-like forms extending toward both vanishing points.
VALUE and SHADING
Choose a light source and apply consistent shading.
- Use black colored pencil for shadow and dark values, white colored pencil for highlights, and let the color of the paper act as mid-tone.
- Blend smoothly and use a range of tones to show form and contrast.
DEVELOP
Include at least 6–8 total forms, varying in size and position. Use overlapping to create depth. Experiment with at least three modification techniques:
- Hole: Cut a circular or rectangular opening into a form.
- Slice: Cut off a corner, side, or section to reveal an interior plane.
- Merge: Combine two or more forms to create a new, complex structure.
- Make sure all forms follow the rules of 2-point perspective.
