Engagement Expectations

At CCA, we are committed to fostering meaningful engagement between students, Learning Coaches, and teachers. To strengthen this connection, we plan to enhance communication expectations and streamline the tools our families use. Currently, students and Learning Coaches are encouraged to stay in contact, but consistency varies. Moving forward, we aim to ensure that each family maintains contact with their child’s teacher at least twice per month through phone, webmail, the LMS instant messenger, or the CCA Edio Phone App. Additionally, we plan to upgrade the Edio app to make it easier for parents to initiate chat messages directly with teachers and to merge parent and student accounts for a more unified and efficient experience. Through these updates, our goal is to see an increase in student and parent engagement by the end of the school year, reflected by a 20% decrease in missing assignments.

Program Format

Within Edio, teachers currently maintain monthly contact with each student’s Learning Coach and are responsible for documenting these interactions. At present, these contacts must be tracked both in a manual spreadsheet and within Edio’s internal communication log, which can be time-consuming and repetitive. Because student and parent accounts are separated, and the Edio Go Phone App does not allow parents to initiate chat messages directly with teachers, communication can be less efficient than intended. Moving forward, updates to Edio could streamline this process by linking parent and student accounts and allowing the system to automatically log contacts, saving teachers valuable time while improving communication between families and educators.

Who is it for?

EVERYONE!

Students, Learning Coaches, and Teachers will all benefit from these engagement updates. By improving communication tools and streamlining account access, families will find it easier to stay connected and informed about student progress, while teachers will save time and effort tracking contacts. Following Kotter’s (2012) eight-stage process for change, these updates will be introduced gradually over the next six months to ensure a smooth and effective implementation.

Why is it needed?

Why?
  • Increase overall student and Learning Coach engagement
  • Improve communication consistency between families and teachers
  • Reduce missed assignments and late work due to lack of contact
  • Streamline teacher workload by reducing repetitive logging tasks
  • Support higher student success through stronger family–school connections

Benefits

The Benefits:

The benefits of these updates will be significant for students, Learning Coaches, and teachers alike. By improving communication tools and simplifying the Edio platform, families will find it easier to stay connected, monitor progress, and address issues before they become obstacles. Increased contact between teachers and Learning Coaches will lead to more timely completion of assignments and improved student accountability. As a result, teachers can dedicate more time to instruction and less to tracking or repetitive data entry. Families may also experience reduced stress as they gain clearer insight into student performance and expectations. Active home and school communication and collaboration help strengthen the student-teacher relationship and increase students’ confidence in their abilities, which in turn supports higher academic performance (Topor et al., 2010).

Potential Challenges

While these updates will bring numerous benefits, several challenges should be considered. The current Edio platform is already operating near capacity and would require significant upgrades to support new features such as unified parent and student accounts, improved messaging tools, and automated contact logging. Updating the Edio Go App so parents can directly message teachers will also require development time and testing to ensure reliability and ease of use. Originally designed to serve 10,000 students, the system now supports nearly 30,000 and continues to grow, making scalability and performance critical priorities. The financial burden to further develop software and infrastructure can be costly. Additionally, some families may initially resist changes to communication expectations or new technological features. It will be essential to clearly communicate the purpose behind these improvements to enhance engagement, streamline communication, and support student success, allowing any concerns to be addressed with understanding and reassurance.

Next Steps

timeline: What comes next?

To implement these engagement updates successfully, several steps will need to take place behind the scenes. The technology department will first need to update the Edio platform to support unified parent and student accounts, automated contact tracking, and enhanced messaging through the Edio Go App. During this process, teachers will be informed about the upcoming changes and trained on how the new tools will simplify communication and record keeping. Once the updates are complete, students and Learning Coaches will be notified and provided with clear, family-friendly instructions on how to use the new features. Communication about these changes will be shared through email, social media, and the CCA website to ensure all families are aware and prepared for the transition.
