Dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale, molti leader europei compresero che era necessario creare legami forti tra i Paesi per evitare nuovi conflitti.Nel 1951 nacque la Comunità Europea del Carbone e dell’Acciaio (CECA), con sei Paesi fondatori: Italia, Francia, Germania Ovest, Belgio, Paesi Bassi e Lussemburgo. L’obiettivo era semplice ma rivoluzionario: mettere in comune le risorse più importanti per la guerra — il carbone e l’acciaio — e usarle per la pace. Nel 1957, con i Trattati di Roma, venne creata la Comunità Economica Europea (CEE), che aprì la strada a un’unione economica e politica sempre più stretta. Finalmente, nel 1992, con il Trattato di Maastricht, nacque ufficialmente l’Unione Europea (UE).
