When the first European settlers came to North America, they traded with Native peoples for food and animal furs. At the beginning, both groups helped each other. Native peoples showed settlers how to grow crops and survive the weather. As time passed, more settlers arrived and wanted more land. They began pushing Native families off their land and made some work on farms or in towns. Fights and wars started between the groups. What began as friendship turned into conflict. Many Native peoples lost their homes, freedom, and traditions because of colonization.

What a "2" Looks Like

One major effect of European colonization on Native peoples was the loss of their homes and freedom, and this changed their way of life. The settlers took more land and forced many Native families to leave their villages. Because of this, Native cultures and traditions began to fade as people had to move and start over in new places.
