What is Formative Assessment?

Formative assessment is an ongoing process used by teachers to gather evidence of student learning during instruction to inform teaching and provide feedback.
  • Your first line of defense to identify and address student misconceptions.
  • It should be a consistent part of your instructional routine; occurs multiple times DURING instruction
  • Offer choice in ways students can respond-chat, mic, within the presentation platform, Zoom tools, on camera, emoji reaction, etc.
  • Differentiate- remove barriers and reach ALL your learners
  • Close the gap between students' current understanding & the desired goals
  • Promotes student reflection and ownership.

Instead of: "You need more detail in your conclusion." Try: "Next time include data and observations from the experiment to support your answer."

Student says: "I like it because it looks cool." Instead of: "That’s not a real critique." Try: "Explain what makes it cool- is it the color, texture, or composition that really stood out to you?"

Instead of: "This answer is correct." Try: "Your answer is correct, but your explanation isn't clear. Can you show me the steps at how you arrived at the answer? "

Zoom Chat Help Article

Just like coffee, learners need percolation time!
  • Provide adequate wait time for learners to complete the assessment.
  • Waiting 5-7 seconds has shown both an increase in length and the quality of responses
  • Encourages less confident students and multilingual learners to participate more frequently
  • Just because learners are not answering immediately does not mean they do not know the answer, they need time to process the question being asked.

Amplify Classroom

Help Article: Classroom Facilitation Tools

Formally known as Desmos Classroom, Amplify Classroom offers a variety of slide and question types that can be shared via a link, much like Classkick, Pear Deck, and Wayground. Teachers can see learners working in real-time and provide feedback in real-time as well.

Video: Authoring Mode In Polypad

This video is about 22 minutes long, but even if you can only watch the first five minutes, you will see how amazing Polypad is. Polypad can be added to an Amplify Classroom slide, and it can stand on its own.

Middle & High School Math Example: Gradient Descent

Upper Elementary & Middle School Example: Music Creation

Elementary School Example: ELA K Game

When the link opens the login page, press "Continue without signing in." See a lesson that teaches learners what gradient descent is and how it trains AI.

When the link opens the login page, press "Continue without signing in." In this example, learners can play an ELA game from an activity book page in edio virtually.

When the link opens the login page, press "Continue without signing in." Learners can see the direct connection between math and music and show their creativity!

Note: CCA teachers are not permitted to ask learners to create accounts.

Zoom Poll to Breakout Room Feature

The Zoom Poll to Breakout room feature helps you create discussion groups based on learners' choices. If you are not familiar with how it works, watch the video below.

Zoom Portal Page

Poll to Breakout Room: How-To

Look for data:

*Zoom chat *Results after each question in Wayground, Kahoot, etc... *Exit tickets *Student annotations/work

Classkick

Classkick is a versatile tool in which teachers and learners can type, draw, add audio, add images, and much more. Learners can work in the tool individually or collaboratively, and teachers can see them working in real-time. Teachers can comment on individual pages and add customized stickers to individuals and groups of learners.

Classkick Portal Page

Bell ringers and exit tickets are great ways to gather formative data. Imagine the variety of open-ended responses learners could share in Classkick using these activities from Britannica School (free to all teachers through Power Library). When you press the button to the left, you can preview activities and add them to your own Classkick library.

Try It

If learners enter the same name in a Classkick you create they can work together in the same workspace. This is great for group activities. Press the button above, and type the name: Comet, to give it a try.

Bell Ringers and Exit Tickets

It can tell us about learning by...

*Looking at patterns in responses. *Diving into how data has changed over time. *Evaluating where learners are making progress with skills.

Microsoft Forms

Microsoft Forms can be used to create surveys, or quizzes that provide learners with immediate feedback. Learners can sign in using their CCA credentials to access this in-house tool, and educators can generate detailed reports. With a range of question types available, educators can tailor forms to meet their specific instructional goals.

Padlet & Padlet TA

Padlet is a versatile tool offering over 19 different response formats. Recent additions include Padlet Sandbox, which provides a larger workspace for learners, and Padlet TA, a CCA-approved AI platform. Access Padlet through Clever to ensure you are logged in with our custom URL: commonwealthcharter.padlet.org.

Middle School Example: Art 7

This Padlet example showcases flexible settings. Learners must include their names and then choose to either upload or record a video to share their artwork. Directions appear in each post, and all submissions require teacher approval before becoming visible. Try adding a post (no art required 😆) to experience the learner perspective.

Example: Physical Education & Health 4: Learner Experience

This example was created in Padlet Sandbox. It is in read-only mode for sharing purposes in this session, but when sharing it with learners, they can move the cards and use whichever tools the teacher enables for them.

Padlet TA, one of Padlet’s AI-powered tools, features Interactive Activity creators that generate virtual manipulatives almost instantly. Unlike Padlet and Padlet Sandbox, these activities do not provide teachers with data; however, they offer learners immediate feedback.

Wayground

Wayground, formerly known as Quizizz, has expanded its platform with a variety of new features that go beyond traditional quizzing. While educators can still create and share quizzes with learners, their new lesson feature allows users to embed questions alongside content slides—making instruction more interactive and engaging. This supports the collection of formative data, giving teachers valuable insights into learner understanding.

High School Example: Geometry Review

Middle School Example: Grade 8 ELA

Elementary School Example: Grade 4 ELA

This is an example of how questions can be added to YouTube videos in Wayground. All advertisements are hidden! It is from their interactive video library.

This is a modified CCA-created lesson from Wayground's lesson library, which offers thousands of lessons to choose from. It features lesson content and questions.

Janae's Zoom Focus Mode Tips

Data can tell us:

* WHAT is going well (what standards are sticking) *WHO needs reteaching *WHERE are misconceptions happening
  • Variety is key!
  • Different questioning techniques/strategies
  • Try to avoid always providing the same types of questions, such as True/False or Multiple Choice- mix it up!
  • Tap into your learners' critical thinking skills with 1-2 Higher Order Thinking questions.

Questions should spark critical thinking & application of specific skills, not just basic recall.Question stems:

  • What would result if you changed ____?
  • What evidence can you find to support ____?
  • How would you improve ____?
  • What is the relationship between ____ and ____?

Genially

Genially Portal Page

Genially has over 1,000 ready-to-use templates, including games and quizzes. There are a variety of question types to choose from, and you can set your Genially sharing settings to generate reports. Each question can be customized, and you can customize the feedback learners receive for correct and incorrect answer choices. Press the red buttons below to view some examples.

The name recording feature could be turned on to collect data from individual learners, depending on how this game is used.

Play as a whole class with teams or assign pairs of learners to breakout rooms where one learner can share the game from their screen.

In this example, the learners must enter their names. Their responses to questions will be recorded.

The middle and high school Genially presentations are from the Genially 101 Educational Technology Coaches' session.
