Reducing Energy Comsumption

Sustainability Practices

The Ma laboratory is deeply committed to integrating sustainability into every facet of our research operations. We prioritize environmentally responsible practices by minimizing resource consumption, reducing waste, and selecting materials and methods that align with green chemistry and low-impact protocols. We actively seek to optimize energy efficiency in our instrumentation and infrastructure, and we encourage digital collaboration to reduce travel related emissions. Sustainability is not an afterthought—it is a guiding principle that informs our experimental design, procurement decisions, and long-term project planning. By embedding these values into our research culture, we aim to contribute not only to scientific advancement but also to the stewardship of our planet.

MIT Green Chemistry Alternatives

Green chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, use, and ultimate disposal. Green chemistry:

  • Prevents pollution at the molecular level
  • Is a philosophy that applies to all areas of chemistry, not a single discipline of chemistry
  • Applies innovative scientific solutions to real-world environmental problems
  • Results in source reduction because it prevents the generation of pollution
  • Reduces the negative impacts of chemical products and processes on human health and the environment
  • Lessens and sometimes eliminates hazards from existing products and processes
  • Designs chemical products and processes to reduce their intrinsic hazards

Social beings

We are visual beings

We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.

We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

Digital beings

Narrative beings

We avoid contributing to content saturation in the digital world.

We tell thousands and thousands of stories. Two-thirds of our conversations are stories.

Pose a dramatic question; it is the essential ingredient to keep the audience's attention. It is usually posed subtly at the beginning of the story to intrigue the audience and is resolvedat the end.

We better grasp the visual content. Visual content is associated with cognitive and psychological mechanisms. Things catch the eye first; the initial image is what matters. We associate visual content with emotions.

Our brain is biologically prepared to process visual content. Nearly 50% of our brain is involved in processing visual stimuli.

We don’t like to be boring. We don’t want to be repetitive. Communicating the same way always is boring and doesn’t engage. We do it differently. We sabotage boredom. We create what the brain likes to consume because it stimulates it.
