France

  • Known as a pioneer in food waste laws, legislation was passed in 2016
  • Supermarkets are banned from throwing unsold food and must donate them.
  • Fines are imposed for violations of the law
  • Restaurants are required to offer “take-away bags” for diners to take home leftover food

  • A food waste law was passed in 2016.
  • The law focuses on the donation and distribution of extra food.
  • Without stressing on penalties, the law encourages businesses to donate or distribute unsold food through a tax reduction scheme.

  • Since 2001, the Food Waste Recycling Act has been promoting the reduction and recycling of food waste as fertilizer and animal feed.
  • Businesses must reduce and recycle their waste and report their results to the government.
  • The Food Loss Act was introduced in Oct 2019 to cut household food waste, with national and local governments educating consumers and collaborating with NGOs.

  • In 2013, a national programme on food waste was introduced.
  • Residents are required to pay food disposal fees by weight, or pay fines for non-compliance.
  • Food waste trucks collect organic waste weekly, before being brought to a plant to be processed.

  • In 2021, a law against food waste was introduced, banning binge-eating videos and excessive leftovers.
  • Food vloggers are not allowed to make and share binge-eating videos online, or they face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan (RM59,119).
  • Restaurants can also charge diners an extra fee if they leave excessive amounts of uneaten food.

  • The Resource Sustainability Act (RSA) was enacted in 2019 to address waste, including food waste.
  • Large shopping malls, hotels and factories are required to separate food waste for treatment and reporting.
