True crime story

Quiet theft

Intruduction

A painting has been stolen from a gallery. The students, as junior detectives, must listen to witness statements, examine clues, and use the provided words to find the criminal.

Start

talk to witnesses

study evidence

investigate!

talk to witnesses to collect the information
Final Task: Who do you think stole the painting? Use the clues (hair, fingerprints, badge) and words to explain your decision.
At the Police Station: You now have three suspects, discuss the details and their alibi

Old Lady's Statement:

“I was outside the gallery and I saw someone near the gallery window just before the alarm went off. It was a good-looking man, tall, and I think he had wavy hair, I am not sure. He was wearing a plain shirt and seemed very energetic. He ran off in a hurry. Oh! I also saw a cute, fair-haired woman leaving a few minutes later. She looked impatient and a bit bossy, but I’m not sure she was involved.”

The guard's badge

The guard's badge was found near the exit. The security guard is a tall, well-built man with short, dark hair and is known to be confident but sometimes arrogant.

Police Officer's Statement:

“I found a broken glass case and a coffee cup on the table. I also found the security guard’s badge. I noticed a strong smell of perfume, probably from a woman. The gallery owner was very serious during the interview, but he was helpful. The blonde woman who works at the gallery was very cheerful and seemed too relaxed.

  • Match the adjectives to the suspects:
  • Gallery Owner
  • Gallery Curator
Key to the Crime: The Gallery Curator is the main culprit. Here’s why: Blonde Hair Evidence: A strand of blonde hair was found at the crime scene near the broken glass. The curator has medium-length straight blonde hair, matching this evidence. The Police Officer's Observation: The officer noted a strong scent of perfume at the scene, suggesting the presence of a woman. The curator’s outgoing and confident personality aligns with this description, and she seemed too cheerful during the interview, hinting that she may be hiding something. The Old Lady's Testimony: The old lady saw a "cute, fair-haired woman" leaving the gallery who seemed "impatient and bossy." This description closely matches the curator’s personality traits. Alibi Issue: The curator claimed to be organizing an art display but didn’t notice anything unusual until the alarm went off, which is suspicious given how close she was to the crime scene. Possible Accomplice: The Security Guard could be the curator’s accomplice. His badge was found near the exit, and his absence during the robbery is suspicious. As an arrogant and impatient person, it’s plausible he helped the curator by disabling the security system or letting her slip out unnoticed. Together, the Gallery Curator (as the mastermind) and the Security Guard (as the accomplice) orchestrated the theft of the painting.
The police found two sets of fingerprints on the cup

- The Gallery Owner, a stocky, medium-height man who is serious and well-organised - A blonde woman who works at the gallery as a curator. She is cheerful, clever, and outgoing.
