Arrival
The French arrived as early as the 17th century with Jesuit missionaries, but the main conquest occured in 1858 with an expedition to Da Neng. Napoleon III was in command during most of the colonization of Vietnam.
The main immediate was that the emperor of Vietnam at the time imprisoned some Catholic missionaries, but the French already wanted Vietnam for its resources and to add it to the growing territories of French Indochina.

Ultimately, the French brought cuisine, the latin writing system, but also took advantage of Vietnam's resources, as well as keeping the Vietnamese people oppressed with policies and exploitation.
Government
(RIght, President of Vietnam Lương Cường)
Vietnam has a one-party socialist republic, where the president is the head of state, while the prime minister is head of government. Most people are happy with the current state of government, but concerns over corruption and access to civil services and services in general in the countryside are the most common.

Education
Compulsory primary school starts at age 6, and continues until upper secondary school. Both boys and girls go to school for the same amount of time. School is divided into 3 main sections, primary (grades 1-5), lower secondary (grades 6-9), and upper secondary (grades 10-12). The first 9 grades are free, and Vietnam removed tuition fees for public schools (which actually just went into effect this school year).
(Distrubition of international schools inside Ho Chi Minh City. There aren't many maps of schools across the country, but most are located within the capital, or in Saigon.)

Music
Traditional Vietnamese genres are plentiful, but most common ones are Cải lương (roughly translated as "reformed theater"), and Hát chầu văn. Instruments used for these folk performances vary, with most become an iteration or version of a lute or fiddle.
Vietnam has V-pop, which combines western pop with their own style. A famous singer is Như Quỳnh, who should have a Spotify embed below this message.
