About this Course

This module is designed to introduce you to Utility Vehicles (UTVs).

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

• Read and practice all safety, operational, and maintenance information in the operator's manual.
• Review pre-ride inspection requirements.
• Review safe rider skills.
• Describe proper braking, turning and slope operations.
• Identify proper cargo securement practices.

UTVs: Key Safety Concerns

• High Injury Rates: UTVs are associated with a high number of injuries.
• Risks: Rollovers, falls, ejections, collisions, and getting your limbs caught in the vehicle's moving parts.

• Recommendations: Riders should be properly trained, use safety gear, and operate vehicles under the right conditions.

Owner/Operator's Manual: Your Best Resource

The owner/operator’s manual is tailored to your specific vehicle and provides essential guidance on safe operation, maintenance procedures, and manufacturer-approved practices. Always review it before riding.

The owner’s manual includes:

• A detailed explanation of the UTV’s features and controls.
• Instructions for operating the specific UTV.
• Important safety recommendations.
• Proper maintenance, cleaning, and storage.

Proper Use

Operate within your personal limits and the UTV’s capabilities, adjusting speed for terrain and staying alert to environmental conditions, such as light, wind, and precipitation, that may affect visibility and control.

Maintain proper body posture at all times, sit upright with your back against the seat, feet flat on the floorboards, and keep all body parts securely within the UTV’s protective structure.

Ensure all passengers follow the same safety guidelines and consistently use manufacturer, designed handholds throughout the ride.

If a UTV is equipped with ROPS, always use the seat belt.

UTV Passenger Safety

As a UTV operator, you are responsible for your passengers' safety. This includes ensuring they understand the proper protocols.

• Wearing the proper PPE.
• Wearing the seat belt properly.
• Sitting in the correct riding position with both feet flat on the floorboard while seated upright with their back against the seat.
• How to effectively use the passenger handholds equipped on your UTV.

• Keeping their hands, arms, and feet inside the UTV at all times.
• Never allowing passenger(s) to ride in the cargo area.

Hill Operation: Uphill, Downhill, Traversing

Exercise caution when selecting hills or slopes to climb, descend, or traverse, especially when transporting passengers or cargo, as added weight can significantly affect stability and control.

Hill Operation Basics

• Driving Uphill: Climbing a slope in a controlled, forward direction.
• Traversing: Moving across a slope sideways while maintaining balance.
• Driving Downhill: Descending a slope safely with controlled speed.

Whether climbing, descending, or traversing:

• Always use the seatbelts.
• Use proper body position with feet flat on the floorboards, your back against the back of the seat, keep all body parts within the UTV structure and make sure that any passengers are using the proper handholds.

If your UTV begins to tip, stay calm, keep your hands on the wheel, ease off the throttle, and lean into the direction of the tip to help stabilize. Never try to jump out unless absolutely necessary; staying inside with your seatbelt fastened is often the safest choice.

Hill Operation: What does it look like?

Driving Uphill

• Refer to the owner’s manual for the angle of slope your UTV is designed to ascend.
• Avoid hills with slippery surfaces.
• Drive straight up the incline.
• Engage the all-wheel drive if available.

Traversing a Slope

• If crossing a hill/slope is unavoidable, drive slowly and turn downhill immediately if you feel the vehicle may tip.
• Watch for loose surface terrain, rocks, washouts, etc.
• Engage the all-wheel drive if available.

Driving Downhill

• Drive straight down the incline and adjust speed for conditions.
• Engage the all-wheel drive if available.
