LETS START!

WHAT IS ROUTE 66?

Route 66 opened on November 11, 1926, being a part of the U.S Numbered Highway Sistem and Avery Cyrus. It is long about 3940 kilometers (2448 miles).

"The mother road"

The myth of Route 66 was born during the 1930s, with the advent of the Great Depression and the "Dust Bowl" phenomenon . Thousands of ruined farmers and families migrated westward, particularly to California, in search of work and a better life. For these migrants, US 66 became the "Road of Hope”. This crucial social role earned her her most famous nickname, "The Mother Road", an expression immortalized by the writer John Steinbeck in his masterpiece Furore (The Grapes of Wrath, 1939).

THE "ON THE ROAD" CULTURE

After World War II the economic boom and mass diffusion of the automobile transformed it into the holiday street par excellence. It became the symbol of freedom and adventure. The landscape along the route was populated with a unique and captivating aesthetic: flashing neon signs, extravagant structures and kitschy attractions designed to attract tourists. Its legendary status was consolidated by popular culture: the famous song "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66", made famous by Nat King Cole, transformed it into a travel anthem.

DECLINE OF THE ROAD

The inevitable decline of Route 66 began in 1956, when President Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, initiating the construction of the modern and more efficient, faster Interstate Highway System. Small businesses in the rural cities found themselves isolated, and many small towns fell into disrepair. On June 27, 1985, Route 66 was officially removed from the U.S. road network, ending nearly 60 years of service.

REBIRTH OF THE ROAD

Despite its declassification, the Route 66 myth never died. Today, large segments of the route have been reclaimed and designated as "Historic Route 66". The road is now a popular global tourist destination, a pilgrimage for nostalgics, motorcyclists and road travelers .

ROUTE 66 IN "CARS"

Its cultural impact remains very strong, so much so that it has inspired recent works, such as the Disney-Pixar animated film "Cars". Radiator Springs is inspired by the city of Seligman (Arizona). Furthermore, each venue managed by the the characters is inspired by a real Route 66 venue. Additionally, the tow truck that inspired Mater's character is located in the "Cars on the Route" in Galena, Kansas.
