Welcome October!
It's time to embrace all of Fall's favorite perks - cozy nights, comfort foods, ghost stories, movie marathons and yes, even pumpkin patches. But here's something you might not expect: autumn doesn't always mean pumpkin and apples.
Around the world, especially in tropical regions, fall is a time for vibrant fruits, roots and vegetables that play a central role in cultural events, family traditions, and seasonal dishes.
Let's take a quick trip across the globe to explore how different cultures celebrate fall with tropical produce:
Jamaica: Yam Festival in Trelawny
Held every October, the Trelawny Yam Festival, celebrates the yellow yam - a beloved staple in Jamaican cuisine. The festival features live music, dancing and of course, plenty of yam dishes, including: 'Roasted yam with saltfish', 'Yam Pudding' and 'Yam Fries'.
Mexico: Día del los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, preparations for this vibrant holiday begin in late October. Families honor deceased loved ones with altars, music and traditional foods. Tropical produce plays a part too: Sugarcane is used to decorate altars and fruits like guava, papaya and bananas are included in offerings and treats.
India: Navratri & Diwali (Late Sept to Nov)
During these major religious festivals , dishes are made using tropical ingredients like yam, taro, plantain and turmeric. As well as banana chips, and sweets with coconut milk. These festival celebrate the victory of good and evil, and food is a key part of the celebration, especially during fasting and feasting traditions.
Brazil - Spring into Summer (October = Springtime)
While Brazil doesn't experience autumn in the traditional sense, October is still full of celebration with Children's Day and the Feast of Our Lady of Aparecida. Tropical treats are everywhere like fruit-based candies, juices and coconut desserts like cocada or tapioca pudding.
So while leaves may be falling in some parts of the world, in others, the fall season is bursting with tropical flavor. It's a great reminder that no matter where you are, food brings people together.

What do you love most about your job? What I love most about my job is that we truly work as a team—we get things done together. I also really appreciate the flexibility and the trust the owner gives to us as employees. It’s a family-oriented company, and that makes a big difference in the work environment. What methods do you use to stay motivated and focused? I stay motivated and focused by sticking to a routine. I also set daily or weekly goals to help me stay on track and get things done efficiently. Who are your biggest influences? My biggest influences are my three kids and my oldest sister. They believe in me and constantly push me to be a better person. Their support reminds me of everything I’ve already accomplished and encourages me to keep going. Tell us a bit about your family. I have three amazing kids. Gabriel, my goofy ball, is 20 years old and loves being outdoors. Natali, my firecracker, is 18 and currently in college studying to become a Radiation Therapist. Jason, my love bug, is 12 and autistic. He’s learning to read and becoming more independent every day, and we’re so proud of him. As a family, we’ve learned patience and how to support each other around Jason’s needs. We’re a close-knit bunch who love spending time together and celebrating each other’s achievements. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Outside of work, I love spending time with my family—going to the pool, beach, bowling or movies . I also enjoy listening to music to unwind, and sometimes I even dance around a bit. It’s a great stress reliever! What's something surprising that not many people know about you? Something that might surprise people is that I have naturally curly hair—and I absolutely love 90s rock music!
