AP FRQ Methods
FRQ Methods
All FRQs on the AP Exam have multiple parts with points divided
All FRQs flow like a story, with the answer from the previous part applied to the next question
There will be 3 total - one large worth 10 pts and 2 short worth 5 pts ea
FRQs require drawing a graph(s), explaining or indicating points or reactions, calculating, or interpreting a table.
FRQ Methods
Directives decoded:
SHOW, ILLUSTRATE, REPRESENT or DRAW - You must draw a graph correctly labeled and legible.
INDICATE - this means tell what direction a variable has gone. Answers typically are "increase, decrease, remain unchanged". Rise or fall or up / down arrows are permitted. DO NOT EXPLAIN!
EXPLAIN - You must explain using economic law, definition, concept, curve shift or movement, or something grounded in economic principle. Formulas and graphs permitted.
CALCULATE - You must show your work and numerical value is needed for answer
SHADE - Be neat and clear where the boundaries are of the area you shade!
FRQ Methods
Steps to ensure success:
1. Read the prompt first and underline the key parts. The must give you enough information in the prompt to guide you to only one possible answer.
Example:
Assume BIOTECH INTERNATIONAL is a firm operating within the product market making two products – plastics, a relatively elastic product in demand and bioethanol fuel a relatively inelastic product in demand.
FRQ Methods
Part A - Usually this is a low-end separator portion to separate the 1's from all other students. It is a basic set-up question:
Example
A. Correctly label a separate S/D graph for BOTH plastics and bioethanol after BIOTECH INTERNATIONAL launches a successful advertisement campaign displaying the benefits of both products, creating a positive stir within the public.1. Indicate the impact it has on:a. the market price for plastics and bioethanolb. the market output for plastics and bioethanol
FRQ Methods
Part B - Typically feeds off the action of Part A and adds another change in the market requiring economic explanation
Example
B. Now due to the successful ad campaign, the marketing team at BIOTECH INTERNATIONAL decides to raise its prices on both plastics and bioethanol fuel. 1. Using a new set of graphs, re-draw the plastics and bioethanol markets after BIOTECH INTERNATIONAL raises its prices on both goods.a. Indicate the effect on:i. Total revenue within the plastic market. Explain.ii. Total revenue within the bioethanol market. b. For plastics, did the Qd change more than, less than or equal to the change in Qs? Explain.
FRQ Methods
Part C - If the last part of the questions it is ususally a high-end separator to ID the 4's and 5's. Typically move the question in another direction, topic or concept.
Example
Assume the public’s incomes have increased and they have a +0.45 Income Elasticity of Demand to plastics and a -2.33 Income elasticity of demand for bioethanol fuel. 1. What types of goods therefore would plastics and bioethanol be to the public? Assume the price elasticity of demand for bioethanol is now at a coefficient of 1. 2. If the price of bioethanol drops, will the total revenue earned by the seller increase, decrease or remain the same? Explain.
