Nala: The Final Clue

When Closing a Wound Makes Everything Worse

Start

Case ID:

023–Nala

Name: Nala Species: Canine | Breed: Labrador retriever Sex: Female | Age: 7 year old Reason for consultation: A 7-year-old Labrador retriever was treated for a dog-bite wound on the left flank 16 hours post injury. The wound was closed immediately without significant debridement. Six days later, the patient returns to the clinic with a painful, swollen wound that is partially dehisced.

Initial Examination

The incision edges are necrotic, and a purulent discharge drains through a nearby puncture tract. The surrounding skin is oedematous, warm, and indurated, and the dog now has fever, lethargy, and reluctance to move.

At this stage, surgical revision is unavoidable: the wound will need extensive debridement, drainage, and open management with delayed closure.

Investigate with:

Ive Watson
