ABUSE HAPPENS CARD #2

About 6 months have passed and things seem to be fine. But it will never be the way it was before the violence. I never know when he’ll hurt me again. My daughter has really been difficult lately. She won’t do her homework or chores and often talks back to me. Tonight, she talked back to my husband. He sent her to her room and then starts yelling at me. I told him she’s acting just like him. In fact, sometimes she calls me the same names that he calls me. I told him that it’s his fault. After that he started slapping and punching me.

What choice should Sierra make?

WILD CARD #1 (Take a chance)

FRIENDS AND FAMILY CARD #2 (If you want to talk with your elders)

FRIENDS & FAMILY CARD #2

You go to a friend’s house and explain that you’re concerned about your husband’s temper. She sees the bruises on you and really thinks you should get away. She tells you about her ex-husband who beat her so bad he broke her jaw. She offers to take you to a shelter.

WILD CARD #1

You’re getting your hair cut when the makeup covering your bruises is washed off. The stylist notices and asks, “What happened?” At first you stay silent, but she shares that she once lived with someone abusive and understands how hard it is to talk. You open up about what’s happening. She explains how she got help, offers her phone, and suggests staying at a shelter for a few days. You think that might be a good idea.

GO TO SHELTER CARD #1

The shelter is far from the reservation, and you feel cut off from your community in a time of crisis. The kids are scared—they’ve never slept away before and cry to go home. Your daughter is angry about missing the pow-wow where she had a special role. You keep remembering what people said about women who went off the reservation for help. You’re unsure what will happen if you return. With only three sick days left at work, you hope he might change—like he promised last time.
