Why do we do observations?

We want you to see the ideas of others and how precisely how they implement them. A lot of SI resources are intended for in-person sessions at 4 year institutions. A lot of the best examples of how to work with our students online are coming from our own SI instructors.

Your review sheet will be shared with the SI leader you observe. The goal here is for you to get the point of view of someone who is down in the weeds with you. Then you can give each other specific constructive feedback on how to build student interaction for better learning outcomes.

You don't need to respond to every question on the prompt side. Just use it as a jumping off point for thinking.

Focus on aspects that go well and what you can apply to your own sessions.

Ability to Redirect Questions

  • Does the leader redirect when asked a specific question?
  • Is there peer to peer interaction?
  • Does the redirection guide conversation without limiting student thinking?
  • Does the leader re-phrase confusing questions?
  • Does the leader ask students to use various resources to find answers?

Group Dynamics and Leader Placement

  • Does the group seem comfortable and positive?
  • Are group members comfortable talking to one another and sharing ideas?
  • Does the leader have a friendly attitude?
  • Does the leader help new students get oriented if they arrive late?

Checking for Understanding

  • Does the leader ask questions that require students to prove their understanding?
  • Does the leader ask others to explain, provide an example or ask for clarification?
  • Does the leader use more than one way to check for understanding?
  • Does the leader use open-ended questions to probe for understanding ?

  • Does the leader wait after students ask a question? (15-30 seconds)
  • Does the leader allow time for students to think deeply before answering?
  • Is the leader comfortable sitting back and letting students work through problem solving on their own?
  • Does the leader intervene when necessary?
  • Does the leader wait after a response is given for students to start a conversation?

Use of Collaborative Strategies

  • Has the leader created a plan that requires students work together on a common goal?
  • Does the leader change the activity when necessary to do so?
  • Does the leader help students form groups if necessary?
