INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE ISLANDS
CONTEXTO
Climate change is a fact. In one way or another, it affects the entire planet. But, of all the territories, islands are feeling its effects most rapidly and intensely. The changes are felt both in natural spaces and in economic activities. This, combined with excessive human pressure on many islands, with the consequent overexploitation of resources, makes it all the more imperative to ensure that a balance between sustainable development and economic development is never found. In the 2024-2025 academic year, IES Bendinat (Baleares, Spain), Escola Básica e Secundária de Santa Maria (Azores, Portugal), and Collège La Montagne (Réunion, France) are developing the Let's Save The Islands project, as part of an eTwinning project.
THE ORIGINAL PROJECT:Let's Save The Islands!
The Let's Save The Islands project aimed to better understand the natural and cultural heritage of each of our islands and share it with others. We also wanted to understand what people, businesses, and institutions were doing to mitigate the effects of climate change. Our conclusions were that the majority of the population is aware of the changes but is not acting accordingly. This leads us to believe that there is still much work to be done.

2025-2026. ACTIVITIES
This 2025-2026 school year, after completing the necessary bureaucratic procedures, we decided to share the original project and this new proposal so that it can be developed in other educational centers, either in its entirety or adapted to each situation, with the aim of achieving our goal. The idea is that, throughout the school year, different themes related to ISLANDS will be worked on and that, subsequently, an exhibition of all the work developed will be held around May 19, International Day of the Islands. Each school/association will be able to participate at its own pace, according to its time and interests, but framed within the following questions:

Natural spaces (landscapes, endemic areas, biodiversity, ecosystems, protected areas, wetlands, forests, ...). Anthropogenic spaces (cultural heritage, gastronomy, customs, traditions, costumes, art, history linked to the sea, ...). Climate change (causes and consequences, real data, mitigation actions, ...).
And May 19th, how are we going to celebrate it?
2025-2026. THE CELEBRATION
May 19th - the celebration of the International Day of the Islands
To make it easier for each organization, we think everyone should celebrate it as best they can according to the reality of each school, since what we want is for this day to be celebrated. Still, we have three ideas we want to share with you.
We swim around the island
Islands on the Playgroud
Human Chain
2025-2026. Celebration
We swim for the islands
Swimming to a nearby island, doing relay races on the beach, swimming around an island, etc.
Islands on the Playground
Perform a performance in the courtyard with students wearing different colored shirts, depending on whether it's the sea, the island, or elements on an island, etc
CHuman Chain for the islands
human chain near the beach, since we would not be islands if we were not surrounded by sea.
Very Important to be aware
Permits and safety measures must be taken into account for any activity. PREVENTION is key. CONSULT US according to the action you wish to undertake.

Let's Save the Islands!
The importance of carrying out a situational analysis is fundamental to raising awareness about what we want to achieve. The students we have today will be the adults and entrepreneurs of tomorrow, so everything we can transmit will remain as part of them. And beyond that, the important thing is to internalize habits that we must change in our lives so that we can continue to live on our islands in the best way possible.
International Day of the Islands? Let's remember why!
The United Nations and various international organizations celebrate international days on many topics. But no one makes special reference to islands. Yes, we can find Forest Day, Mountain Day, and Environment Day, but there is no Island Day. Therefore, we call for the celebration of International Islands Day for various reasons: to give them visibility, to give them greater recognition for protection and conservation, and to raise awareness of their environmental, economic, and social importance.
