Why resilience and what does it mean?
In an environmental context, resilience is most often understood as sensible use of natural resources for present needs, the conservation of ecosystems, and pollution control. But the concept is much broader than that.
UN Sustainable Development Goals
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) form a set of 17 global goals. In addition to environmental goals like preventing soil degradation, halting biodiversity loss, combating climate change, sustainably using the marine resources, the UN sustainable development goals also address good health and well-being, quality education, clean freshwater, gender equality, affordable and reliable clean energy, good jobs and economic growth, reducing inequalities, ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, etc. This list is not exhaustive. All of this is integrated into the concept of sustainable development.
In 2024 trends in the SME operational environment, documented by international organizations, indicated priority on:
The trends
Access to sustainable finance, i.e. financial resources dedicated to economic activities, products and services that have an impact on climate change mitigation or adaptation; biodiversity conservation, pollution prevention and the circular economy.
Circular economy: an economy based on reusing and remanufacturing materials or products, reducing waste to a minimum, and keeping resources in use for as long as possible.
Mentoring: developing employees' potential and skills in a supportive environment and organisational culture that promotes overall well-being.
Women's entrepreneurship: the initial scepticism has been overcome; women entrepreneurs bring new perspectives and leadership skills to the business world and create new opportunities.
Cooperation agreements: this practice is gaining momentum due to its benefits — it consolidates resources, reduces operating costs, reduces economic uncertainty and turmoil, and makes businesses more resilient to unforeseeable circumstances.
Artificial intelligence: it is becoming a leading trend that is significantly transforming the business landscape in all types of manufacturing processes, reshaping operations, decision-making processes and customer interaction.
Year of Transformations
2025
What kind of transformations?
Those are the transformations that occur in the way of functioning of the economic entities and the market in the process of transformation from IT to digital culture. The key differences between the old "IT culture" and the new "digital culture" are in their scope, perspective, and goals and the transformations are necessary to transform one culture into the other.
IT culture focuses on the internal processes and practices of the technology department and the management and usage of information technology. Digital culture extends to the entire operation of the organization and influences behaviour and interactions within team members, between teams, and with the outside world. IT culture focuses on the efficiency of technology, while digital culture focuses on the impact of technology on people, processes, and overall business strategy. The former aims to optimize the use of technology for internal operations, while the latter aims to harness technology to drive innovation and competitive advantage.
In short, digital transformation is a mode of operation driven by learning and adaptation that is happening faster than that of the competition. This is certainly an easier task for large companies than for small ones, many of which are wondering whether they have the necessary capacity for digital transformation.
It is important to understand that digital transformation is an ongoing process rather than a short-term commitment. True transformation requires the comprehensive integration of digital technologies, which requires entrepreneurs to become technology leaders.
