Why this movie matters to me as a data science / AI student

What can a story of wilderness teach us about staying human in a tech world ?
Brief overview of Into the Wild : Who Christopher McCandless was, his journey, his motivations.
Solitude vs Connection
Solitude vs Connection
Christopher McCandless: You know, about getting out of this sick society. Society!
Wayne Westerberg: [coughs] Society! Society!
Christopher McCandless: Society, man! You know, society! Cause, you know what I don't understand? I don't understand why people, why every fucking person is so bad to each other so fucking often. It doesn't make sense to me. Judgment. Control. All that, the whole spectrum. Well, it just...
Wayne Westerberg: What "people" we talking about?
Christopher McCandless: You know, parents, hypocrites, politicians, pricks.
Wayne Westerberg: [taps Chris' head] This is a mistake. It's a mistake to get too deep into all that kind of stuff. Alex, you're a hell of a young guy, a hell of a young guy. But I promise you this. You're a young guy! Can't be juggling blood and fire all the time!
Freedom vs Reality
Freedom vs Reality
One of the big ideas of the movie is freedom. Chris wants to live without rules, without money, without pressure. That’s why he goes into the wild. But freedom is never total. In Alaska, he has to fight for food, deal with weather, and face danger. He discovers that freedom has limits ; nature itself becomes the new system he has to respect. This is important: freedom is not about escaping everything. It’s about finding balance between independence and responsibility. We can’t be completely free, because life always brings limits
Bridge to AI & Data science
Staying Human in the Age of AI
As a student in data science and AI, I connect deeply with this idea. Technology is powerful, like Chris’s dream of freedom, but without a human core, it risks isolation and dehumanization.AI is built on numbers, but it should serve people. This film inspires me to remember: behind every dataset, there are lives, and behind every algorithm, there are human consequences. My personal goal is to stay ‘as human as possible’ in my work to use technology not to escape society, but to make it better
