Greenware
Greenware is any clay object that has been shaped but not yet fired in the kiln. It's dry, very fragile, and ready for its first firing.
Bisqueware is clay that has been fired once in a hot oven (a kiln). It is now a hard, permanent ceramic that won't turn back to mud if you get it wet, but it's still porous like a sponge, which makes it perfect for soaking up the glaze before the final firing!
Bisque
coil
A coil in ceramics is a long, snake-like rope of clay that is rolled out by hand.
Coiling is one of the oldest methods of hand-building pottery. You stack these clay ropes on top of each other, joining them together as you go, to gradually build up the walls of a vessel, like a pot or bowl. The finished piece can be left with the coil lines showing for texture, or they can be smoothed away.
A slab in ceramics is a flat, even sheet of clay that is rolled out, similar to a pie crust or cookie dough.
Slabs are a fundamental building block used to hand-build pottery and sculptures. Instead of throwing clay on a wheel, artists cut and join these flat pieces together to create objects with straight sides, like square boxes, mugs, or geometric vases.
