How was the Eocene Epoch like?
The Eocene epoch is primarily characterized by being a much warmer time period within Earth's history. This epoch consisted of several rainforests beginning to grow, however many grasslands were slowly leaving.
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (or PETM) was a sudden increase in temperature that occured during the Eocene. Scientists are unsure on how it started and ended, but it is widely believed that there was a massive increase in carbon either due to large wildfires or from carbon being released from fossilized plants.
Plant life in the Eocene
The Eocene is characterized by warm and humid temperatures, which caused rainforests to be the primary biome within this time period. This gave way to many species of maples, birch, and redwood trees that were able to grow with the warm and wet climate of the Eocene
First Modern Mammals Seen!
The Eocene epoch brought about some of the very first appeareances of modern mammals seen today. These consist of elephants, bats, whales, and even Hyracotherium, which are the ancestor of modern horses.
An Ice Free Earth
Due to the earth's heated up temperature during this time period, the Eocene Epoch is occaisionally regarded as one of the few moments of Earth's history where it was "ice free".
