The Permian Period

Extinction of the Permian Period
Created by Robert Farrar

The Permian Period ended with the largest mass extinction event in the Earths History. This was known as "The Great Dying" The Great Dying killed almost 96% of marine life and 70% of terrestrial vertebrate spieces were killed. The Great Dying was a combination of multiple events occuring near the end of the Permian Period. The Great Dying was a combination of: -Massive volcanic eruptions (Siberian Traps) -Climate change and global warming -Ocean acidification and anoxia (loss of oxygen) -Methane release from the sea floor

When It Started - When It Ended

The Permian period began around 299 million years ago and ended around 252 million years ago.

Organims of the Permian Period

Plant Life: - Decline in swampy, coal-forming forests -Rise in Gymnosperms -More arid-adapted plants spread due to drying climates Marine Life: -Marine ecosystems were diverse, with brachiopods, ammonoids, crinoids and corals - Fusulids were abundant and are now used as index fossils Terrestrial Life: -Syapsids dominated land life - these were mammal-like reptiles-Early diapsid reptiles appeared - ansestors of lizards, snakes, and dinosaurs-Amphibians were still common, but reptiles became more dominant due to the adaptation to drier enviroments

Climate in the Permian Period

Back in the permian period the world used to look very different. Back in this period the continents were formed together into the supercontinent Pangaea. The climate in the permian period was initially very cold and glacial. As time continued it became warmer and drier over time which led to more regions of tropic wetlands.
