How to teach listening and strategies.by: Jade Abigail Sánchez Te

Readings and some relevant aspects.

During the last weeks we used 4 types of readings to learn how to teach listening and why it is important. Some of the autors are Harmer, Brown Lee and underwood. For the fourth reading I couldn´t find the autor´s name.

Relevant aspects from each reading are:

Harmer.

Brown Lee.

UNDERWOOD.

Ur (101-116).

All these aspects that I mention are very important for me as a future teacher. knowing terms like bottom-up (when listeners concentrate on understanding individual words) or top-down (to describe an approach and understand the overall) or the difference between authentic and adapting activities can help me to better plan my listening activities or know how the noise can affect my future students in listening. All these terms show us different ways to get better every day while continuing to teach and trying to change the old ways of teach listening, because listening is one of the most important skills for students to communicate at least for me it is as a future teacher.

Which are the most relevant aspects from these readings?

There are not many differences from those readings, because all of them try to explain how we can teach listening beyond the ancient ways that are known and have similar aspects. All those readings give us strategies, normal mistakes, some activities that we can use, and tips for teachers and students. For example, Brown and Underwood talk about strategies and activities but these two readings explain in a deeper way how to design them which is a longer explanation about it. Besides, Harmer and the other author also talk about strategies, activities and give some tips, but these are more concrete (shorter).

- Factors which affect the choice of pre-listening activities.-The need for clear instructions. -Lack of complications. -Definition and purpose of post-listening activities. -Factors which affect the choice of post-listening activities. -Types of pre-listening activity - Authentic activities (this is very important to students and teachers)

-Integrating the four skills and the advantages of integrating two or more skills-Some myths and pedagogical objectives (like the belief that listening is a passive skill). -Pedadogic questions about teaching listening ( this part can help the teacher to planning in a best way his/her activity -List of listening comprehesion processes. - What makes listening difficult to students (all the 8 terms are very important to learn and understand). -Principles for teaching listening skills - Listening techniques from beginning to advanced

Aspects or topics that are more relevant

- Skills and strategies like thinking about the topics of the listening before it begins and activating what they already know about it.)-The top-down and bottom-up listening - The sound of music and the stimulus for students -The different ways to use video, recording audios, dictation etc..

Aspects or topics that are more relevant

-Goals and problems in teaching listening (like: the brevity, pronuncaiton, vocabulary, grammar, noise, redundancy, varied accents or facial expression and body language) know those problems can help us to planning easier the activities.- The 5 practicals tips (don´t just use recordings, teacher talk, bring visitors, develop your reading-aloud skills and make sure you include a varied sample of listening texts). -Know the exceptions like no pre-set task or no preparation. -The 3 practical tips. (don´t overload, try it out , don´t pre-teach too much vocabulary) - The types of activities.-adapting activities the contrast of the authentic activities.
