Meaning of the verb to be
The verb to be is one of the most versatile in English, so in many cases its meaning depends on the context in which you find it. However, its main meanings are the following:
To be (existential/essential): He is smart = Él es inteligente To be (state/condition): It is cold today = Hoy está haciendo frío There is / There are (existence): Is there anybody inside? = ¿Hay alguien adentro? May / Allowed to (permission): Tell her she is not to open the door to strangers = Dile que no puede abrirle la puerta a extraños.
This is the foundation for understanding the verb to be. Later on, I will show examples based on automotive mechanics.

It is used together with other verbs to indicate that actions or states are taking place at the moment. For this, the –ing conjugation is used.

I am a Volkswagen mechanic. = Yo soy mecánico de Volkswagen.I am not repairing the brakes today. = Hoy no estoy reparando los frenos. Am I using the right tool? = ¿Estoy usando la herramienta correcta?
