Is It an Expression or an Equation?

What's the difference?

What Will We Learn Today?

Hi sixth graders, in math today, we will be learning about expressions and equations. Our W.A.L.T for the day: we are learning to describe the differences between an expression and an equation.

Here's an Example:

REMEMBER:

An equation will always have an equal sign but an expression will NEVER!

Where to Begin:

Throughout the 7 hotspots, explore the elements of both an expression and an equation. Reflect on those differences, then show your knowledge by answering the questions, which will lead you to decide if it is an expression or an equation.

What to Look For:

  • 7 hotspots
  • On each slide, look for the "click me" dot and explore wherever it takes you
  • Please take notes in your notebook throughout the lesson

What is an Equation?

Find out what an equation is by clicking the red button

What are the parts of an Equation

Watch this video to learn the different working parts of an equation. Be able to explain and identify various parts of an equation.

Take notes throughout the video

After watching the video, please answer this question in your notes: What is the operator in an equation?

What is an Expression?

Click on the red dot to find out what an expression is

What are the parts of an Expression

Take notes throughout the video

Watch this video to learn the different working parts of an expression. Be able to explain and identify various parts of an expression.

After watching the video, please answer this question in your notes: How are the terms in an expression different from the constants in an expression?

Is it an Expression or an Equation

For this activity you will sort different math phrases and sentences into this T-chart labeled expressions and equations.
The expressions and equations that need to be sorted are hidden; drag your mouse across the screen to locate them!

Draw this chart in your notes and write the equations and expressions in the correct column

Lets Review!

Now that you have learned the difference between an expression and an equation, it's time to review. Click here to answer a few questions to show me the knowledge you've learned
