Hawaii's screen representation over the years

A police drama, “Hawaii Five-0” ran from 2010–20, revamping the original version (1968–80) of the same name. Despite trying to include Hawaiian niches and words throughout its episodes, critics have said its predominant white casting and vacation-esque plot undermine its representation, according to the New York Times.

“Operation Pacific,” a war drama, focuses on an American submarine crew’s struggles with a torpedo malfunction after a Japanese attack in the South Pacific. It would be the first of many World War II films to capture Hawaii into the American national imagination as a fixture of Pacific Theater. .

An epic-style limited series about the unification of the Hawaiian islands, “Chief of War” has been considered a turning point in Native Hawaiian storytelling, because of its focus on authenticity in the production process, casting and screenplay.

"The Hidden Pearl” is a silent short film that follows a half-Hawaiian college graduate who ventures into Hawaii in search of pearls to resurrect his lost fortune. This was the first major film filmed in the islands after cinema was introduced there in 1897, beginning the “Haolewood” tradition, according to Utah State University.

Starring larger-than-life Elvis Presley, “Blue Hawaii” presents a World War II veteran’s rebellious reintegration into life in his native land, Hawaii. It has been criticized because of its stereotypical portrayal of characters as well as its assertion of Hawaii as a vacation paradise.
