Deforestation in the world

Interactive Map
Canada

The main causes of deforestation in Canada are forest fires intensified by climate change. An interesting fact about this topic is that there are so-called zombie fires, which means that fires spread underground even in winter.

Southeast Asia

Deforestation in Asia contributes to rising greenhouse gas emissions, a crucial factor in climate change and biodiversity loss on a global scale. A significant portion of deforested areas (45-65%) are not even productive, being abandoned due to low soil suitability, inadequate management or speculation.

Alaska

The Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the United States and one of the largest intact temperate forests in the world. For decades, it was subject to heavy industrial logging, but policies are now in place to protect it.

Romania

According to a Greenpeace report, more than 50% of Romania's ancient forests have disappeared in the last 20 years due to corruption and weak law enforcement. The Ingka Group, IKEA's largest franchisee, has played a significant role in this destruction, which has occurred even in supposedly protected areas.

Amazon

The causes of deforestation in the Amazon include the expansion of livestock farming and agriculture (such as soybean production), illegal logging, mining, the construction of infrastructure such as roads and dams, increased urbanization, and forest fires, often associated with practices to clear new land. Immunity from environmental crimes and the relaxation of environmental laws also fuel and exacerbate the problem.

Sub-Saharan Africa

The conversion of forests for agriculture is the main cause, accounting for 93% of deforestation for shifting cultivation, in addition to the cutting of wood for firewood and charcoal.
