“Matron needs a maid. Someone to go to the market, cook food, clean the house, wash clothes, plait hair for girls like Princess Bolaji and, as you can see, sell her tasty treats. I even do Bolaji’s homework. The maths here is too hard for her.” “That Bolaji is a spoilt brat,” I snapped. “So how did she pass the exams?” Caro shrugged and whispered very low. “Matron went to Bolaji’s house and gave her the questions.” “What? How do you know this?” I practically screamed. “Ssh! This girl! You want to put me in hot soup, ehn? Don’t tell anyone because they will know it’s me.” The fear I had seen in Caro’s eyes that first day started to return. “Swear you won’t tell.” She wanted me to put my finger on my tongue and raise it to the sky but I couldn’t. Mama always warned me to never promise to keep a secret when the person themselves had already failed to keep it. If it is too much for them, then it will be too much for you. “Just tell me, Caro.” I nudged her shoulder with mine.

She began to speak after a thoughtful pause. “You remember the time wey I first see you for here?” I smiled inside. Caro only spoke pidgin when she was relaxed. “Yes!” I said, recalling my astonishment at seeing her here that first time. “Later that evening, Bolaji and Alero came over to Matron’s and even though they tried to whisper, I heard most of what they said. At first, I couldn’t understand why Matron was so worked up after seeing you. She told them that the principal must never find out that she had hired a maid for Bolaji. Alero laughed and said that the maid was for her too, otherwise she would tell Princey. Bolaji did not laugh when she told Alero that before she got her Matron did not even know her name. They got into a huge fight and then Alero said that Bolaji was not even supposed to get into the River School if not that Matron had shown her the exam papers beforehand. If you know how loud Matron shouted at them to keep quiet, but they didn’t even answer her. After they left, Matron warned me never to talk to you again. She said she could make things very difficult for my family but I could tell she was really afraid.”

“Matron needs a maid. Someone to go to the market, cook food, clean the house, wash clothes, plait hair for girls like Princess Bolaji and, as you can see, sell her tasty treats. I even do Bolaji’s homework. The maths here is too hard for her.”

Reveal Explainer

This shows that Bolaji receives support that pupils, like Jummy, do not. Whilst most pupils have to do their own chores, Bolaji has people to do everything for her. This also reflects the inequality between Caro’s life and Bolaji’s life. Bolaji’s family is wealthy so she gets special treatment. Caro’s family is poor so she has to work hard for people who don’t appreciate her efforts. Even though Caro works the hardest, she has the least to show for it.
