My name was one of the first to be called as I was in Nile House, room one.
“Here!” I shouted clearly.
“Bolaji Oni,” Senior Moradeke called, but nobody responded.
“She hasn’t arrived yet. We may have to leave without her,” Mrs Aliu said, shaking her head in disapproval.
“Ma, look at those four big cars just coming, there is a girl in orange housewear inside one of them.”
“Ah, that must be Bolaji Oni, the girl who almost didn’t make it.”
The four cars parked on my side of the coach. Two large soldiers came out of the last two cars and stood guard. A driver stepped out of the second car and ran round to open the door for a man dressed in an all-white guinea with a brocade agbada flowing to the ground. He wore dark sunglasses and a dark green traditional Yoruba cap with several insignia. He looked like a prince!
“These must be the Oni royal family who own Redbrick Bakery!” The driver went to the third car to open the door. Out stepped a girl in what was supposed to be Nile housewear, only it looked like a party dress. Her white blouse had puffy sleeves and a collar that stood up straight just like its wearer.

She was about my size, but she walked as though someone pulled her head from above and her nose was so pointed it looked like it could be used to pierce ears. She ran to the man, hugged him and wouldn’t let go. Mrs Aliu sucked her teeth in irritation and got off the coach. As she approached the newcomers, so did Matron.
While Mrs Aliu and Matron spoke to the prince, the new girl climbed back into the car.
There seemed to be an endless conversation that we couldn’t hear, but you could tell there was a disagreement of some sort. Matron looked very angry with Mrs Aliu.
“We can settle this when we get to the school.” Mrs Aliu’s voice was suddenly piercing.
After a few more moments of difficult conversation, the girl finally got out of the car and on to the coach with Mrs Aliu. Her eyes were swollen and red. She looked away and found a seat at the front. Matron was still standing outside, her arms folded and looking very displeased indeed.
Lola nudged me and whispered, “This one is going to have fun at the River School.”

We can infer that Bolaji is also a new pupil at the River School because the staff are calling her name during attendance. We can infer she is late because the teacher says ‘we might have to leave without her’. We can guess that she might be used to special treatment as she is risking missing the bus instead of arriving promptly.
