In this activity, you will review a real-life scenario and apply what you have learned in previous activities. Start

Scenario

Alex, a graduate student in Global Health Innovation, has been granted the opportunity to participate in a six-month internship program with a renowned global health organization operating in rural areas of Indonesia. The organization's aim is to reduce the prevalence of smoking through education and awareness campaigns in a region where smoking rates, particularly among men, are among the highest in the world.

Scenario

During one of the first community meetings, Alex notices that the local attendees, primarily men, are somewhat disengaged during the discussions about the harms of smoking. From his pre-trip studies, he recalls that smoking is deeply ingrained in the local culture and associated with masculinity, social status, and hospitality. Moreover, the local language has numerous words for smoking, many of them associated with positive feelings and activities. Alex also realizes that the main communication materials are written in Bahasa Indonesia, while many of the locals are more comfortable with Javanese, the local language. This leads him to wonder whether the language barrier could be contributing to the lack of engagement.
