Displaced Chagossians, as well as Mauritians, were excluded from decision making and denied acess to marine resources...

• Violation of the participation and fairness principles.

• US military base undermines credibility of the no-take designation.

• Conservation goals were prioritized at the expense of social justice and the inclusivity of native/ coastal based communities.

Results :

Achieved

• Reduced illegal fishing;
• Protected one of the most intact coral reefs in the world;
• Served as an international scientific benchmark;
• It implemented naval patrols, electronic licensing;
• Strengthened regional cooperation;
• Recent sovereignty agreement with Mauritius.

• Exclusion of the Chagossians,
• Severe episodes of coral bleaching;
• Persistent cases of illegal fishing;
• Lack of transparency in the MPA's creation.
