Situé sur l’Agora, centre politique d’Athènes. Accueillait la Boulè : conseil de 500 citoyens (50 par tribu). Rôle : préparer les décisions de l’Ecclésia (assemblée), contrôler les magistrats, gérer les affaires courantes. Les membres étaient tirés au sort chaque année → principe de rotation et égalité. Symbole : la participation de tous les citoyens à la vie politique.

Colline d’Athènes, en face de l’Acropole.Réunion de l’Ecclésia (assemblée de tous les citoyens) dès le Ve s. av.JC -Aménagement : grande esplanade pour plusieurs milliers d’hommes ; bêma (tribune) pour les orateurs. -Les citoyens étaient répartis en 10 tribus : chacune envoyait des représentants et participait aux votes. -L’Ecclésia se réunissait environ 40 fois par an sur la Pnyx pour voter les lois, décider de la guerre/paix, élire certains magistrats. -Principes : isonomie (égalité devant la loi), parrhèsia (liberté de parole). Symbole : démocratie directe, où chaque citoyen a sa place dans le gouvernement.
