Options for Minor Victims

Because minors are being increasingly targeted in sextortion schemes, many of the resources that are available to victims of sextortion are targeted to people under 18. Minors who are being threatened with sextortion can report those threats to the CyberTipline, run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). If their intimate images have been posted, they can use the Take It Down service (also run by NCMEC) to remove those images from the internet.

Click the Info button to learn more about the CyberTipline.

Info

Reports submitted to the CyberTipline are reviewed to be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency, and to provide support to the victim. NCMEC advises reporters to expect the following:

1 Review

3 Law Enforcement

2 Contact & Support

How Take It Down Works

Whether or not they decide to make a report, they can also use the Take It Down service, also operated by NCMEC. Take It Down is a free service that can help you remove or stop the online sharing of nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit images or videos taken of you when you were under 18 years old. It does this by assigning a unique digital fingerprint, called a hash value, to the images or videos. Online platforms can use those hash values to detect these images or videos on their public or unencrypted services and take action to remove this content.

If you don’t know where your image is online and don't have a link to make a report above, but you are worried it is out there, Take It Down can be a helpful tool. Take It Down users can remain anonymous.

CyberTipline

The CyberTipline takes reports on the following issues:

  • Nudes or sexual images/videos of a child;
  • Someone chatting online with a child about sex;
  • Sexual abuse of a child that occurs offline;
  • Someone seeking or offering a child for sexual acts in exchange for something of value (e.g., money, food, gas, shelter, clothing, drugs)
  • Unwanted sexual emails or texts either involving children or sent to a child
  • Websites or domains that contain sexual content but have similar names or URLs to mainstream sites that may be misleading to children
  • Websites or domains that have sexual content (words or images) embedded in them which minors might see
  • Other forms of sexual exploitation of a child not listed here

If a person was a victim of any of the above issues or other form of sexual exploitation when they were under the age of 18, they can make a report. Reports can also be made by people who have information about the possible sexual exploitation and/or abuse of a child.
