The piano was invented in the 1600's in Italy. Bartolomeo Cristofori made the first piano, he wanted an instrument that could play both softly and loudly, depending on how hard you press the keys. Over time, the piano became very popular all over the world. Many famous musicians, like Beethoven and Mozart, wrote music for it.
