MUN basics! Rules and procedures
*What is MUN * Flow of debate *Points and Motions *Common used words/phrases
What is MUN?
A role-play where you represent a country. You debate global problems. You look for allies to propose solutions. You develop skills: public speaking, negotiation, writing, persuasion.
based on the real United Nations!
General rules
- Respect speaking turns.
- Speak as your country, not yourself. (Example: “Mexico believes…”).
- Be clear and brief. One strong idea is better than a very long speech.
- Listen carefully. Sometimes convincing means adding or adjusting ideas.
- Build solutions together. The goal is not “winning” but reaching agreements.
Placards
In order to say anything, you should raise your placard and get called on by the Chair .
Points and Motions
To participate during the moderated or unmoderated caucus (debate) you must use a point or motion!
Types of points
Motions to start
Most motions will require a vote in order to pass.
Info
Motions to debate

Common words
Adjourn: The debate is suspended until the next meeting. Chair: A member of the dais that moderates debate, keeps time, rules on points and motions, and enforces the rules of procedure.
