Currency

The official currency in Gran Canaria is the Euro (€).Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, shops and most places — especially in tourist areas. However, it’s still a good idea to carry a small amount of cash for local markets, taxis or smaller businesses.

Did you know?

Tipping is not mandatory in Spain. If you enjoyed the service, leaving a small tip or simply rounding up the bill is appreciated — but never expected.

Did you know?

Most people talk about the “Seven Canary Islands”, but since 2018, La Graciosa has also been officially recognised as the eighth island. It is the smallest and least known island, with around 700 inhabitants, untouched landscapes and breathtaking views.

Climate

Gran Canaria is known for its mild and pleasant climate all year round, often called “the island of eternal spring”.However, weather conditions can vary — and lately they have become more unpredictable. The south (Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Amadores) is typically sunnier and drier, ideal for beach days most of the year. The north is greener and cooler, with more clouds and a fresher atmosphere. The interior and mountain areas offer lower temperatures and can change quickly.Recently, unusual weather patterns have brought more rain, stronger winds and even stormy days — sometimes affecting daily life across the island. This variety is what makes Gran Canaria so unique.

Did you know?

Gran Canaria has more than 10 different microclimates.Locals often say:“If it’s cloudy where you are, just drive 20 minutes — you’ll find the sun.”
