Pollution Solutions
Where does catchment water come from?
1. Rainwater is collected through a network of rivers. 2. Used water is collected in underground sewers. Separate systems ensure that the waterways are free of pollution.

- Singapore is an island surrounded by salt water.
- They don't have a lot of natural rivers or lakes
- The population is dense so there are a lot of people who need water.

What are the positives and negatives of importing water?
Water agreements only last for a certain period of time Imported water is not enough to meet water demands.
Positives
Negatives
It is cheaper It saves space that can be used for other buildings.
A reservoir is a large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply.
Water catchment provides ecosystem services like recreation (fun!)
- Canoeing - Kayaking - Fishing - Dragonboating
Notice the TWO parts of this diagram. 1) Water is collected from rainwater and stored in reservoirs. 2) Water is collected from homes and factories and piped to purification plants.
A reservoir is a large natural or man-made lake. Singapore has 17 reservoirs.
Catchment is the action of collecting water from rainfall over a natural drainage area. Fill in your graphic organizer as you click each icon!
You need at least 4 facts.
Singapore is a small country so it lacks the space to collect and store all the rain that falls on it. They use rivers, canals, and drains to put that water into the reservoirs.
The catchment water is also a natural habitat that will be protected.
YOU are a HYDROLOGIST
Hydrologists study how water moves across and through the Earth's crust.

Singapore needs water from other countries. IMPORT means to bring in from another country. Singapore imports water from the country of Malaysia
Scientists actively track the water quality in the reservoirs. Regular water quality tests are also conducted.
If an area or a facility is found to be polluted, clean up begins right away.
COUNT how many desalination plants there are!
The process of reverse osmosis pushes seawater through a membrane. (See filter picture above)
