Welcome to NNRG’s forestry curriculum!

What is this course about?

Throughout this course, you’ll explore the world of ecological forestry — from the soil beneath your feet to the towering trees that shape entire ecosystems. You’ll learn how foresters study, measure, and manage forests to balance environmental health, wildlife habitat, and human needs. In partnership with the Russell Family Foundation and the Tukwila School District, we’ve created a certificate program designed to give you a glimpse into a forestry career and the foundational knowledge needed to work in the field. Along the way, you’ll use online tools, practice real-world data collection, and discover how forests play a vital role in fighting climate change, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining communities. By the end, you’ll see how every tree, plant, and organism fits into the larger story of our region’s forests — and your role in helping care for them.

What to expect

The course is divided into three units. Unit 1 includes nine lessons focused on forest ecology, exploring how forests function as complex ecosystems. Unit 2 features three lessons on tree measurements, where you’ll learn how foresters assess tree growth and forest health. Finally, Unit 3 covers three lessons on forest management and harvest, tying everything together to show how science and stewardship guide real-world forestry practices. Altogether, the course takes about 10 hours to complete. At the end, you’ll have the opportunity to take a final exam, and if you score 75% or higher, you’ll earn an official NNRG Forestry Curriculum Certificate — recognizing your achievement and understanding of sustainable forestry practices.
