Rights & Responsibilities

The system of government in the United States provides many freedoms to citizens and non-citizens. Some freedoms, like the right to vote, are reserved only for citizens, while others, like freedom of religion, extend to all. The government relies on citizens to vote and carry out other duties and responsibilities. A high level of civic participation is important to keep the government accountable to the needs of the people.

Voting

Voting allows citizens to choose leaders who make important decisions about laws, schools, taxes, and community issues. By casting a ballot, people ensure their voices are heard and help keep the government fair and accountable.

Obeying Rules & Laws

Following rules and laws helps keep communities safe, fair, and organized. By obeying them, citizens protect everyone's rights and show respect for others and the system that supports them.

Examples:

  • Stopping at red lights
  • Paying taxes
  • Respecting others' property

Staying Informed

Staying informed helps citizens make smart choices about issues that affect their lives. It also helps them vote wisely and take part in building a stronger democracy.

Examples:

  • Read local newspapers
  • Watch news broadcasts
  • Follow reliable news websites
  • Attend community meetings

Serving on a jury

Serving on a jury makes sure that people accused of crimes receive a fair trial. In a jury trial, ordinary citizens are chosen to listen to the evidence and decide if the person is guilty or not guilty. When people serve on juries, they help to protect everyone's right to equal treatment under the law.

Paying Taxes

Paying taxes provides the money needed for important government services like schools, roads, and public safety. By contributing their fair share, citizens help support their community and keep society running smoothly.
