MUSEUMS OF MADRID

The Prado Museum

is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid. It's widely considered to have one of the world's finest collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 20th century, based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, and the single best collection of Spanish art.

Las Meninas (Velázquez)

The most representative and famous painting in the Prado Museum.. It is one of the largest canvases, over 3 metres wide and almost 3 metres high. They represent up to 11 characters, such as the meninas, the daughters of Philip IV and Mariana of Austria, and even Velázquez himself.

The Queen Sofía Museum

It's a contemporary art museum. The building where the museum is located was formerly a hospital. It has glass lifts on the outside of the building.

The Guernica (Picasso)

The most representative and famous painting in the Queen Sofía Museum. A painting measuring over 7 metres wide and 3 metres high depicts the suffering caused by German bombing raids on Guernica (a place in the Basque town)

thyssen Museum

It's an art gallery that houses one of the most important private art collections in the world, donated by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family to the Spanish State, and is located in the Villahermosa Palace.

Mata-Mua (Paul Gauguin)

It's one of the most representative painting in the Thyssen Museum. Mata Mua means “Once upon a time” in the Maori language. The painting shows a large central tree dividing the scene, with a group of women dancing around the figure of the moon goddess on the left, and two seated Maori women on the right, one of them playing a flute.
