Definition: A monologue is a long speech delivered by a character to other characters in the scene or to an audience. Audience: The character is addressing other characters on stage or directly speaking to the audience (e.g., breaking the fourth wall). Purpose: Often used to persuade, inform, explain, or express feelings to others.

WHAT IS A MONOLOGUE?
You have 5 minutes to finish your monologue and to make sure it's emotive and dramatic. Add your monologue to the Google Slides document - find your name and add your work. After lunch, each person will perform their monologue.

When adding annotations, think about how you move, how you use your voice, and how your body tells the story of the blizzard. Use the following categories and vocabulary to support your choices.

Locomotor Movements

  • Show how you move across the stage.
  • Key words: walk, run, creep, stagger, stumble, slide, leap, crawl, shuffle, rush, freeze in place.
Axial Movements
  • Movements that happen around your own axis without travelling. Key words: twist, bend, stretch, contract, reach, turn, swing, shake, hunch, curl.
Gestures
  • Small movements that communicate meaning.
  • Key words: point, wave, clutch, grab, shield face, cover ears, clutch chest, reaching out, pushing against wind.
Body Language / Posture
  • Overall physical stance that shows emotion or situation.

Use of Space

  • Think about where you are on stage and how you move through it.
  • Key ideas: downstage vs. upstage, centre vs. edges, diagonal pathways, crossing space, clustering vs. being isolated.
Levels
  • Show power, status, or struggle by changing height.
  • Key words: standing tall, crouching, kneeling, lying flat, jumping, reaching high.
Vocal Skills Your voice is part of the storm too! Key words/skills:
  • Pitch (high, low, wavering) Pace (fast breathless, slow heavy)
  • Volume (whisper, shout, strained, muffled)
  • Tone (desperate, fearful, exhausted, resilient, panicked)
  • Pause/Silence (breathless moments, isolation, dread).
