Sacagawea – Bird Woman

“A Picture Book of Sacagawea” by David A. Adler tells the story of Sacagawea, a young Shoshone woman who played a key role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Captured as a child, she later became a guide, interpreter, and symbol of peace, helping the Corps of Discovery reach the Pacific Ocean. Her bravery and legacy continue to inspire generations.

1805 – Pacific Ocean

Reached the Pacific with Lewis & Clark, becoming a symbol of peace and guidance.

1799 – Captured

At about 11 years old, she was taken prisoner by the Hidatsa during a raid.

1804 – Joins Expedition

Joined Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery at Fort Mandan with her husband.

1805 – Heroic Act

Saved maps, medicines, and supplies during a boat accident; reunited with her Shoshone family and secured horses for the expedition.

1788/1789 – Birth

Born in the Rocky Mountains (Idaho), member of the Shoshone tribe.
