Context
This was located in Greece: Athens. It was created around the time period of 447 - 438 BC. Its made of marble and its hieght and width is 134.50 cm with a depth of 41.50 cm. It was Culturally made with clasical greek. It function is to tell a story through imagry we will see in other tabs on this page when we go over text.
Style
Looking at the figure ontop of him it is a less realistic feeling as it is of a centar which is a fictional figure and yet its still Naturalized in what they are. The horse hald looks like a horse would. Its tail fur shows each line like hair. It has depth created by the line work. The musclues are shown in curving with the legs and bodys position. Though it is missing parts it almost add to the image its portraying. Adding a part to the story even the artest didnt know it needed, We also see the lines at the bottom of the sculpture a flowing type of lines almost as if its fabic following in the flor of the body.
We already know this was carved out of marble, we can see on the edges it seems to be broken off of something most likely a bigger pieace of marble. It is Monocromatic as it only consits of shading of the marble and darker shades of it from withering of weather and age. Mostly consisting of the same tanish grey color. It is a 3 fimentional piece as it almost pops off of the back part, as well as a Naturalistic and stylized feeling. We can see looking at the man he has full motion of his legs and the muscles are almost curving with the body. Love handles soften into the marble like skin. Neck lines show the tendens in the neck allowing for a more realistic feel.
Subject & story
In this qoute we can see the battle between having too much and not having enough in a representation of men. Which can also be another insight of the statue we see but can also be a far reach as it is known for the fight of the centars and Lapiths.
In this the story it tells is of a centar trying to take and sexually assult a women of which it is holding. The man is under him to represent Lapiths tho they won the battle it was akmost made to make fun of them and/or a show of power to them. This we can aslo link to our texts as it can also represent the battle between excess and defect in the intermeadiate. The battle between what can represent all of men and not just one. The middle ground of which men can all be compaired to. In the readings it states " In everything that is continuous and divisible it is
possible to take more, less, or an equal amount, and that either in
terms of the thing itself or relatively to us; and the equal is an in
termediate between excess and defect.
