It was known as Smyrna in ancient times and was founded by the Greeks, captured by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before belonging to the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Currently, its extensive archaeological sites include the Roman Agora of Izmir, which functions as an open-air museum. On a hill is Kadifekale, or Velvet Castle, built during the reign of Alexander and overlooking the city.
