Electrical Fires
Why Electrical Fires Are Different
- They are caused by overheating wires, overloaded circuits, damaged cords, or faults inside equipment.
- Fire may be fueled by energized conductors — meaning the fire itself could be “live.”
- Attempting to fight an electrical fire with water or the wrong extinguisher can cause shock or electrocution.
How to Respond to an Electrical Fire
- Sound the Alarm & Call 911
- Alert others and activate the fire alarm system if available.
- Call emergency services immediately.
- Shut Off the Power (If Safe)
- If a breaker or disconnect can be accessed safely, shutting off power will de-energize the fire.
- Never force a breaker or open panels — report and wait for qualified personnel if unsure.
- Use the Right Extinguisher
- Use a fire extinguisher that has a Class C rating (rated for electrical fires).
- This could be a single Class C extinguisher, BC extinguisher or ABC extinguisher.
- Evacuate If Unsure
- If the fire is spreading or safe extinguishment isn’t possible, evacuate immediately.
- Close doors behind you to slow fire spread.
What NOT To Do
- Never use water or water-based extinguishers — water conducts electricity.
- Never attempt to fight a large electrical fire alone.
- Never delay evacuation if conditions are unsafe.
