Carbon Storage
By Landry Yohan - T2
Presentation of the scientific innovation
CO₂ produced by power plants, factories, or even directly found from the air, is captured, then transported for underground storage. Typically, it is injected into deep geological layers, such as old oil or gas fields. where Co2 remains trapped. Giant fans project air or factory fumes against silica plates which filtering them. The CO₂ is then trapped, and the plates are heated to a temperature of 80 to 900 degrees Celsius to recover the CO₂.
the improvements brought by carbon capture and storage
- This technology directly reduces greenhouse gas emissions from large industries.
- It can support the energy transition: coal, gas, and oil are still widely used worldwide, and CCS offers a solution to limit their impacts while renewable energies take over.
- This innovation can also be applied to direct air capture, which means that CO₂ already present in the atmosphere could be removed.
- help certain sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as steel, cement, and aviation.
Limitations and Risks
- It remains very expensive: installing and operating these systems requires a lot of energy and money, which makes them difficult to deploy on a large scale.
- In addition, some fear that CCS will give large companies an excuse to continue polluting, instead of actually reducing their consumption of coal, oil or gas
- encourage us to continue in the same system.
