Ethical Obligations
Looking at the ethical guidelines set by the MCEE, educators have an ethical oblicaiton to the students and to the professional competence. Teachers are ethically obligated to protect students from harm. Following madated reporting laws is one way that teachers can do so. Educators also have an obligation to follow all laws and policies (NASDTEC, 2023).
There is a federal act called the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) that requires each state to have procedures and protocols in place to report suspected or known abuse and neglect (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2023).

State Laws
Each state has its own laws that declare who is a mandated reporter, what should be reported, and how to report. Common mandated reporters include teachers and school personnel, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, social workers, counselors, and childcare providers (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2023).
Teachers have a responsibility to the students and to report any suspected abuse or neglect. Teachers have a responsibility to pay attention to their students and note anything abnormal. Teachers should also work to create a safe environment for students.
