Additive Inverse
Rule: If you add opposites, your answer will be ZERO.
Multiplicative Inverse
Rule: If you multiply reciprocals, your answer will be ONE.
If we understand these basic
vocabulary terms for math, we can more easily understand how to
solve problems.
Expressions: Problems that DO NOT have an equal sign
With EXPRESSIONS, can simplify to find the
answer
Examples: 5 + 7 – 8 OR 9 – z + 6
Types of Problems
Equations: Problems that DO have an equal sign
With EXPRESSIONS, can simplify, but don't
always get a final answer.
Examples: 5 + 7 – 8 = 4 OR 9 – z + 6 = 16
Let's Practice!
